The Lemonade Award

I've have been awarded 'The Lemonade Award'.

But, quite frankly, I don't know HOW on Earth I was chosen as this award is given to bloggers with positive attitudes, the ability to loo
k on the bright side, you know...those who turn life's lemons into lemonade, hence the name, 'The Lemonade Award'.

Yes, I am positive to some extent, but I also bust on people {mostly celebrities} A LOT on this blog and quite frankly I’m not always so nice. I’m a ‘tell it like it is’ sort of girl and has gotten me into trouble from time to time, but c'est la vie.

I'd like to accept this award and thank all those peeps who read my blog on a daily. I'd also like to thank all the designers, artists and celebrities who give me fodder to talk about when I'm not pimping my own work...Mwah!

Anyway, here are the
guidelines that go along with getting this Award, since everything these days comes with a catch:
1. Put the lemonade logo on your blog. {see above }
2. Nominate 10 blogs which show great attitude or gratitude.
{Honestly, 10 seemed like a lot, so I'll only be nominating 5...see below. }
3. Link your nominees with your post.
{done }
4. Let your nominees know they’ve also received the award by leavi
ng a comment on their blog. 5. Link this post to the person who gave you the award...and give them some promo love. {That would be Miss Hot Rocks herself...see below. }

I know that my nominees will just love me for this...So, with the necessary business stuffs out of the way, let's move on to the Awards Ceremony. I hereby nominate the following for The Lemonade Award:
1. Oh Mandie!
2.
Tizzalicious
3.
Pendientuda
4.
Misses Kwitty

5.
SugarBerry

And, here are some pretties by
Hot Rocks Glass Jewels:

You'll definitely wanna check out her shoppe for unique designs using artisan lampwork beads, genuine Venetian glass beads, dichroic glass, semi precious stones and sparkling Swarovski crystals...both new styles as well as delicious rare vintage crystals.

Illustration Friday...

One of my goals for this New Year is to paint again on a regular basis -- and to also finish the creative pieces I start in order to stay on schedule while completing new work for my shows and my store.

Another goal is to participate weekly in
Illustration Friday, which is why I've re-worked my piece "Captive" {you can see the original here} and added a sweet Faux Boix texture to it. The theme for this week's illustration is pale.

Tribute to Mundogominola

Repost...

Artist, friend, and Etsy seller Claudia Moya aka Mundogominola recently passed away from a rare heart condition. She was a young and talented illustrator living in Madrid, Spain. According to Claudia's final wishes, her friend Kristina aka Krize is finishing sending out Claudia's sold artwork. Etsy asked Kristina to share this tribute she wrote about her dear friend and I am sharing it with all of you as a repost.

Claudia truly was a talented artist and we at Dirty Pretty Things are very sad to learn of her passing. We are touched by this tribute...May peace be with her family and friends at this time.

Claudia Moya (Mundogominola)

(“Mundogominola” – translation “The World of Gummies”)

Her world was beautiful and colorful like a Gummies Store. This was a world of dreams, treasures, happiness, and smiles.

She shared this unique, sweet world with everybody. It was created by a girl who lived in her cozy little apartment in Madrid with her cat named Wish, lots of books, dim lighting and colored pencils. This is how Claudia Moya’s world was and still is.

She was a beautiful girl with a fragile heart and little hands that made magic. It radiates from her geisha's, young ladies with red cheeks and long necks, charming princesses and jewelry like little treasures. A girl who couldn’t sleep at night, who instead dreamed during the day. The one who wanted to be a cat, and left an impression on everyone she met. She was a simple and unique person; a girl whose desire was to make the world a more beautiful place with her illustrations. And she did it, taking advantage of every single minute as if she knew there weren’t many left. Loving, drawing, sharing, and always smiling. She used to say, “I wouldn’t want to be there when the laughs are over.” And the laughs went with her.

She will always be in the hearts of those who loved her. It is a misfortune for those who never had the chance to meet her personally. Claudia's characters will remain within the books and bookshelves inside the walls of many houses in far away countries, in the inspirations of other artists, in her cozy blog, her smiles in photographs, the magic on her jewelry and her image in our memories.

Her magical world remains without her, and will always be here for everyone: the smiling ones, the sad ones, the dreamers, and those who forgot how to dream, just like Claudia, who used to open her heart without fear or hesitation. The same heart that stopped beating one day this winter.

Her Etsy store was her little refuge, a place where she could show all the pretty things she made, where she could find people like her. People who, even without knowing each others faces, could share so many important things in their work. A place to teach, find and create. A place to lose and find ones self.
I am pretty sure she keeps smiling now from a cloud, with colored pencils in one hand, a sketch in the other, and a little bag of gominolas.

Be happy forever, Claudia. Thank you for MundoGominola and everything that you never kept from sharing with us.

Pretty Things Spotlight: * Maicen *

Update: The lucky winner of a print by Maicen of her choice is KAT ROMAN!

CONGRATULATIONS!

◦ ○◦○ ◦

Oh, the enchanting delights and joy of new discovery! You are about to experience the work of Maicen, a delicious young Norwegian girl who's work is full of amusing lovelies, quirky shapes, spindly appendages and fashionable clothes, unique and identifiable as her own.

"I draw when I am in the mood for it. I have learned the hard way by trying when not inspired at all. The brain works in mysterious ways...."

Although a lot of Maicen's work is in black and white, she creates colourful paintings full of her fashionable quirky characters as well. She enjoys focusing on simple lines, trying to see how much emotion, mood and movement she can create with the most littlest amount of lines.

Tell us a bit about you…
I
am a 25-year-old Norwegian girl and a part-time schoolteacher, teaching first grade (its really fun). I love art and enjoy drawing and painting. In my spare-time I just draw and draw:)… I also love interiors, design, fashion and vintage-stuff too. My vintage purse collection is constantly growing (my husband says that I don’t need them all, but I do :)

Tell us about your name Maicen…
The name comes from Germany, where they took the name Maria and
turned in to Maiken. Then, it became popular in Sweden with forms like Majken, Marikken, etc… Finally there is Maicen :) There are actually only five people who have the name spelled like mine in Norway, and I do like it. I very much feel like a Maicen!

What inspires you?
Everything! I get very much inspired of almost anything, but if I have to pick just a couple of things, I would have to go with summer, my students, fun-looking
people, movies and fashion mags. I draw when I am in the mood for it. I have learned the hard way by trying when not inspired at all. The brain works in mysterious ways...

Apart from creating things, what do you do for fun?
I read, watch movies, listen to great music, re-do the flat and just have fun with my husband. I also love to travel, but my budget
is quite tight at the moment.

What has been your most memorable moment selling your art?
I have been cra
fting since I was about 15-years old. I started selling in a local store when I was 20, and I still LOVE when I get sales!!! When I had my first show, a lady bought 5 drawings the very first day! I was SO happy as I was expecting maybe a couple of sales during the whole show. It really made me more confident with myself and my art.

If you could be a super heroine, who would it be and why?
Wonder-woman of course. She just looks so cool!

More about You...
My l
ongest and most exciting trip was to the US. My husband, my in-laws, my brother in-law and myself went from LA to San Francisco to Las Vegas and back to LA. It was great!
The same "crew" are going to Thailand soon, and I cant wait to get there! It just seems so great, warm and friendly.

Any future plans for your art?
I want to start making t-shirts and baby-clothes with my drawings printed on them. I think it
would look really good and I hope the public agrees!

Any advice for fellow artists...
Trust your own instincts, and do what feels right for YOU.

Pretty Things Spotlight: * Micawber *

◦ ○◦○ ◦

Update: The winner of the print of her/his choice by Micawber is PETRA... CONGRATULATIONS!

◦ ○◦○ ◦

There's something about Micawber...

Crystal, the artist behind Micawber, is obviously very talented...but, it's that very balanced blend of sweet, sassy innocence and an almost sensual devilishness in each of her illustrations that tells you exactly who she herself is.

The eyes in her "more grown up" illustrations pull you in, ...trapping you in a mysterious fantasy land of delicate thin-necked characters. Her women are str
ong and yet vulnerable... urging you to notice them as they hide in shadow.

Yet there is a sweet childlike side to Crystal too..., this playful side perhaps more evident now with the birth of her young daughter Avie, whom she describes as "one incredibly awesome little girl". Complete with pretty pink dresses, bubbles and ribbons, you can find Crystal's sweet, innocent side in her shop of children's illustrations called Little Beanz.

Whichever side you prefer, there is undoubtedly no end to Crystal's talent...

" I've always fancied anything even remotely cutesy....in fact, I should have a head full of cavities due to the amount of which I adore "sweetness."

Spotlight: Micawber

Tell us about You
My name is Crystal Wall, soon to be Crystal Lancaster as I am getting married in 3 weeks! I live in a growing suburb area in Southern New Brunswick, Canada, called Quispamsis(say that 5 times fast!) with my soul mate, Paul, and our 16 month old daughter, Avie. I am a classically trained animator who has worked as an animator/character designer in the animation industry for the last 6 years. I recently decided to take the plunge and try working from home selling my art prints, participating in art shows and doing freelance animation contracts so that I can be with my daughter. It can be a bit intense and scary at times, but overall, it has been a super rewarding experience.

Where does the name Micawber come from?
The name Micawber comes from a character, Wilkins Micawber, from Charles Dickens' novel, David Copperfield. His name has become synonymous with someone who lives in hopeful expectation, which is the way I try to live my life, so I thought it was quite fitting! :)

What inspires you?
I tend to get insp
iration from a lot of different things. I absolutely adore studying other artists works, their choice of composition, the way they apply the medium, their colour choices, I find it all really captivating. Sometimes, I am inspired simply by colour, a fantastic colour can really get my brain swirling with ideas! I'm loving on turquoise a lot lately. Also, I tend to get a lot of ideas in those moments in bed, just before I drift off to sleep, the hard part is remembering them all in the morning!

Apart from creating things, what do you do for fun?
I
love music, so, I love seeing live shows. My fiance is very into music as well, so it's something we've been able to share. Heck, even our daughter has been to 5 concerts already while she was in the womb! What? It counts! :) I have been trying my hand at sewing a bit lately, it's definitely something that I would like to pursue more in the future, I just need to invest in a decent sewing machine. I enjoy photography, my fiance is quite into photography as well and we recently invested in a Canon Rebel xti....sweeeeet! I also enjoy sitting out on the deck on a hot, sunny day with a nice cold beer and friends.

What has been your most memorable moment selling your art?
I don't think I could narrow it down to just one moment, I've had a lot of rewarding moments overall regarding my work. The first time I ever saw some of my animation work air on television was pretty exciting. Custom pieces always bring a certain level of accomplishment and satisfaction, also, simply having someone tell you that they are a fan of your work is pretty exhilarating as well!

Any advice for fellow artists...
Always be willing to change, adapt, and expand your work. Too much of the same thi
ng can become very boring. Try new techniques, mediums and styles. Have fun with it!

Tell us more...
This is honestly the first time in many years that I have had the time to truly c
oncentrate on my own artwork again. Working in the animation industry is quite rewarding, but it leaves little time for your own artistic ventures. Since I decided to work from home at the end of last year, I have been blessed with the time to really work hard on my own visions again, and I am absolutely loving it. I will be growing and evolving with my work and techniques as much as I possibly can over the coming years, so be sure to keep a close eye on me! Also, I'd like to thank you Raven for featuring me on your awesome blog, you rock!

Pretty Things Spotlight: * Coco Bijou *

◦ ○◦○ ◦

Update:
The winner of the Coco Bijou "Nocturnal Bloom" Band give-a-way is BUNNYB...Congratulations!

◦ ○◦○ ◦

Nicole Robertson of Coco Bijou appreciates the bea
uty of imperfection.

Celebrated by way of twisting, hammering and patina, imperfect beauty is
reflected in every piece of jewelry that she creates, making each piece unique and one of a kind...just like each of us.

"The concept of perfection always makes me squirm a bit, so I strive to create unique jewelry that allows us to celebrate our deliciously imperfect beauty."

Coco Bijou pays tribute to the strength and beauty in women with simple, organic, stunning pieces full of rich colour and amazing textures. Elegant earrings, beads, necklaces and rings sparkle with light and love.
These beautiful works of art are to be loved and treasured.

Spotlight: Coco Bijou

Tell us about you…
My name is Nicole Rob
ertson and I live in Bozeman, Montana with my super tall fiancé (we are getting married on June 21!) and our darling black lab, Chilkoot. I was born and raised in the gorgeous little artsy town of Homer, Alaska, and got my degree in sociology at the University of Oregon. Upon graduation, I became hooked on travel and volunteer work overseas, where I really established the framework for the kind of person I wanted to become…and finally, two years ago, decided that I was ready to settle into a home and do some nesting. So, here I am, pursuing the world of art from my workbench, and loving every moment of it.

What inspires you?
Women inspire me. I was raised with two amazing older sisters, and a very talented and loving mother. We have always found strength and inspiration in one another - and that has helped to guide me in my life. I am always in awe of the bonds of friendship amongst women. We understand one another - we lift each other up, and laugh about the quirks of our unique experiences. That is fascinating to me. I intensely admire women who respect their bodies and capitalize on their strength and wisdom. Upon this alone, I am able to create works that speak to these qualities in all of us. I was raised to appreciate the beauty of imperfection, and I reflect this in my jewelry.

Apart from creating things, what do you do for fun?
I adore everything associated with summer...camping, hiking
and growing herbs. I love to cook and treat my friends to an evening of appetizers and wine. I'm obsessed with tennis, but haven’t found a partner to play with here in Bozeman. Kurt (fiancé) and I are utterly happy so long as we can get out and play in the snow and sun.

What is your most memorable moment selling your art?
A customer contacted me to ask if I could create her wedding ring. I was SO honored, flattered and nervous all at the same time. I spent an enormous amount of time making sure it was exactly what she wanted and, when all was said and done, she loved it. It warmed my heart to know that I had created something that this woman would hold dear for the rest of her life. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be capable of something like that.

Any advice for fellow artists…
Keep creating! Experiment, even if it means wasting some of your materials in the case that the piece doesn’t work out, just give it a shot. Some of my favorite pieces
are the result of winging it on a design idea, and the rewards that come from taking those risks are so gratifying!

Tell Us More…
Throughout my life, I never considered myself an artistic person. The thought of a blank canvas and a palette full of rich colors scares me no end. Then suddenly, my life took a turn and I began to sense this void - I wanted to create, but didn’t know where to start. Since that change of direction, I have been embraced by such a warm community of artists on Etsy that I am inspired to fully commit to this new path that my life has shown me. Also, thank you to women the world around. You endlessly inspire me.

Pretty Things Big Give: Across the Pond

Update: The winner of the sterling silver ring from Across the Pond is IRMA'S ROSE COTTAGE!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

◦ ○◦○ ◦

Casey from Across the Pond always loved crafting, but never seemed to find time to make her creations a reality until recently. Lucky for us! ...And, if you were wondering about the name of her shoppe, she says that even though she was raised in the South, a little piece of her heart lies "across the pond" ...in London.

What inspires you?
I'm mostly inspired by the materials I work with. I'm obsessed with beads, findings, gemstones, paper, fabric, and ribbon. When I get my hands on them, I love imagining what they could be, planning things out, and manipulating them into something beautiful.

What has been your most memorable moment selling your art?
Opening my Etsy shop was the first step on this journey, so I'd say that was the most memorable. I've only been open since this past November, but I've learned so much. I've improved dramatically at making my products, photographing and presenting them, and communicating with buyers. On Etsy, I feel like I'm a part of a community as well as a movement, which is just a great feeling.

Any advice for fellow artists...
Keep creating! It can get frustrating, but just find inspiration somewhere and keep at it.

Pretty Things Big Give: Jared May

Update: The winner of the Jared May print is JEN {LazyCrazyJen}!

CONGRATULATIONS!!
◦ ○◦○ ◦

Jared May is a photographer who believes in learning by trial and error. Through his ups and downs, his experience has evolved into the most beautiful and breath taking images. His mother taught him at an early age to embrace his imagination, and that has framed his idea-making in a large way. Therefore, he's always willing to try an odd idea with his camera, even if he's 99% sure it won't work. Lucky for us, because sometimes those ideas actually do work and make for some cool images.

Jared May
What inspires you?
In my work, I try to capture those things that I feel intensely. I like to capture feelings I'll want to revisit later. In a way, it's a diary of sorts for me, reminding me where I've been and who I was. I look for things I find beautiful or magical or just plain interesting. I like to try to develop themes.
As I look back on my work later, I begin to notice that I go through stages, and a lot of my work can be grouped into a few different time periods.

What has been your most memorable moment selling your art?
This one is easy. It would my first sale on Etsy. I had never sold a photograph before, and it was tremendously validating. I went for days with a giant smile on my face telling anyone who would listen, as many times as they would listen, "Hey, did I tell you I sold one of my photographs?" I still get a smile when I think of it. If my involvement with Etsy were to shut down tomorrow, I will have gotten more than I could have asked just from that one experience.

Any advice for fellow artists...
Do what is meaningful to you. Find like-minded people who appreciate and love your work - you can find them by looking for people whose work you love. Pay your bills some other way. Not that I know everything. :)

Pretty Things Big Give: Little Pieces of Art

Update: The winner of the sweet little ACEO by Little pieces of Art is MATILDA SUE!

CONGRATULATIONS!!
◦ ○◦○ ◦

Brandy of Little Pieces of Art creates original artwork inspired by and created with vintage photographs discovered at estate sales and antique stores. Not given the privilege of learning their history, she creates a fictional story through layers of paint, ephemera, and many mediums... in order to breath life back into these individuals whose photographic records have been misplaced or forgotten. Visit her shoppe now for 10% off your entire purchase when you purchase 2 or more pieces {excluding the print section and custom work}.

What inspires you?
My inspiration comes from snapshots, with my favorite photos from eras that cover the1920’s -1950’s and 60’s. These years seemed to produce some the best candid shots, lovely family snapshots which captured a time when life seemed a little simpler. And… well, okay, I admit it, I love the 70’s they were a lot of fun (I was there) with the Polaroid camera and seemingly endless sunshine. Basically if you present to me a photo of an individual or group from any day in time, possibly posed or caught in a captivating moment. There is a very good chance that I will be inspired to build a collage telling a story around this person or group of people.

What has been your most memorable moment selling your art?
I did some commission work for a lady I work with, whose husband has ALS. She wanted to give him a special an
niversary present. I did 4- 5 x 7 pieces on clay board using numerous wonderful photos she provided. I was very moved by her story and very inspired.

Any advice for fellow artists... I have a favorite quote:
"Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work." -Stephen King
So, my advice would be to just keep on working...as long as you don't give up, in time you will be successful.
