Pretty Things Fashion Inspiration... Katy Rodriguez

When I came across Katy's images recently, I felt a vague familiarity like I knew her...and I discovered that our paths did indeed cross in the past.

As many of you know, I used to live in New York City. When I lived there, not only did I design and model clothing, I also shopped for it like a maniac. I had an entire room of my 4 bedroom Hell's Kitchen apartment devoted entirely to clothing, shoes and accessories...a lot of which still had tags on it many years later when I cleaned house in order to make my move to Los Angeles. {I'm not the only one who does this, right?} *sigh*

Anyway, TMALSS...I realised that I used to shop in the East Village vintage store that Katy Rodriguez co-owned called "Resurrection". I looooved that store!

Now, Katy also resides in California and designs her own line, drawing inspiration from "
her insatiable love for history’s quirky fashion characters and sartorial worldliness".

For her SS 09 collection, Katy played with the complex relationship of the Spanish bourgeoisie and ancient Mexico. She mixes elements of tailoring and European refinement with the vibrancy of Mexican folk attire to create a wearable palette of fine Italian cottons, gorgeous laces, and printed silk. Her collection epitomizes the political heroine, a rule-breaking woman who espouses her cultural identity while simultaneously maintaining a fierce independence and strength. The collection is sophisticated, vibrant, and innately feminine.

I'm sure that you'll love her beautiful work as much as I do...now, who wants to go shopping?

Never give up your dream, be disciplined.

- Gulbin Yavuz

The year 2009 marks the tenth year anniversary for this week’s featured artist People's Couture.

That means ten years of innovation and independence to the owner/designer Gulbin Yavuz, who’s shop’s label Indie Collective is a constantly evolving clothing and accessory line. From modern "street couture" to handmade uni-sex tee shirts, Indie Collective aims to transform conceptual couture into modular, interactive clothing and accessories.

And she’s just getting started…

★ Tell us about you…
hello, my name is gulbin yavuz i'm the designer of indie collective label we have a little store in the culver city art district in los angeles, california
which is also an art gallery and my atelier in the back. i love my job! i am a self-taught designer
i was a stylist/costume designer in hollywood for 17 years i worked with some of the most brilliant directo
rs, actors, art directors, hair & make up artists, cinematographers and i feel very fortunate for that.

★ What inspires you?
what inspires me is mostly mother nature. there is no better artis
t and designer than her. i am also inspired by human-made things, avant garde music, surrealists, 1960's and 1970's, industrial machinery, road signs, max ernst, jean-luc godard, history just to name a few...

★ Apart from creating things, what do you do for fun?
read, play chess, cook, travel, take long walks at the beach, hang with family & friends, go camping, hiking

★ What has been your most memorable moment selling your art?
when the director of santa monica museum of art/smmoa invited me to do a fashion show there and when my designs were accepted to california design biannale 05

★ Any advice for fellow artists...
force yourself to be completely original.

never give up your dream, be disciplined.

★ If you could be any character, who would it be and why?
i love superman but i don't want to be a superwoman! however i would like to be "maria" in fritz lang's metropolis, the good one!

★ Where have you traveled or where would you like to travel…Why?
england, france, belgium, holland, italy, germany, austria, switzerland, former yugoslavia,

bulgaria, greece, turkey, mexico, most of the states in the us
would like to go to mongolia and china also entire south america

★ Tell us your future plans for Indie Collective...
i wish indie collective was known little more widely! but the trends are following our very business model. we are already small, efficient, nimble and green not to mention independent
i think we will be able to survive the economic turmoil or at least i hope! we will continue to be in the cutting edge of design pushing the boundaries regardless. ...sharpen and refine and the good things will happen....

★ Anything else…
i'm super busy always creating new stuff. indie collective does not produce seasonal collections, we produce constantly, and all seasons, it is a world market, it is always summer and winter simultaneously. we are against senseless production of clothing, we produce on demand, our energies go towards design rather

than big production everything is made with care, by hand, with love.

Pretty Things Spotlight: * Binary Winter *

Eco-friendly clothing is nothing new, but standing out from the recent onslaught of eco-friendly apparel choices is.

Welcome to the wunderful world of the Binary Winter Press! Their guilt-free clothing is proudly sweatshop-free and printed by hand in a vegan workshop.

"Our designs are an amalgam of the things we love best, from Art Nouveau to robots, satellites and the ballet of flight. We are smitten with willowy lines and charmed by the grace of machinery."

You can tell that
owners Cody and Sheatiel have a blast doing what they do, which what I love because it shows in their work. Their cute, quirky designs are fun, flirty, sweet and a little bit Steampunk in a most exciting way.

Spotlight: Binary Winter

{ click to enlarge... }

★ BinaryWinter is…
Binary Winter Press is Cody Vrosh and Sheatiel Sarao. Cody draws, Sheatiel writes, and we both do design. We recently escaped from San Francisco to the charming little island town of Alameda. You have to travel on a bridge or an underwater tunnel to get onto the island, so it feels remote and secret, even though it's only a few minutes drive into SF. We love it!

★ What inspires you?
Everything. There is a crushing amount of
beautiful things in the world. The hard part is deciphering it all. Our stuff is an amalgamation of all the things we love, from animals to astronauts. We find technology to be delicate and graceful. We especially have a soft spot for displaced technologies, old typewriters and gear work machines that once upon a time seemed so futuristic and are now obsolete. We feel sad for them and try to rescue them whenever we can.

★
Apart from creating things, what do you guys do for fun?
Dancing, reading, and making yummy vegan foods. We also love comic book conventions. Technically, its work for us because we usually have a booth, but we get to meet a lot of awesome creative folks and have so much fun.

★ What has been your most memorable moment selling your clothing/art?
A girl recently got our dove design tattooed on
her shoulder, that was pretty sweet. And Wil Wheaton from Star Trek: The Next Generation bought one of our shirts. And seeing any tiny babies wearing our onesies is pretty awesome. It's really hard to say, we're still a pretty young company so every new thing that happens is the best thing that's ever happened.

★ Any advice for fellow artists... Create as much as possible. Inspiration will come when it comes but in the meantime you can practice rendering or new methods. If
p
ossible, never stop, sketch on napkins and write ideas on your hands. Otherwise, set aside time every day when you can practice your craft.

★
What is Binary Winter's Plan for the business future? A new book, definitely. For the apparel line we would like to expand with more styles and get our gear carried in more boutiques and the like. We'll be rolling out some new designs based on our favorite fairy tales soon, as well.

★
What would you say makes your clothing and accessories stand out from others? All of our tees are printed on sweatshop free clothing with water-based inks in a vegan workshop, about as guilt free as you can get. Also, our designs incorporate a lot of science fiction elements without being literal about it, we're mad about the geek pride but we'd like to think stylishly so.

★
Where does the name Binary Winter originate? In our book "The Irrelevant Redemption: A Steampunk Fairytale", there is chapter in which the heroine Emma is lost in a frozen forest. The snowflakes are all 1's and 0's, a Binary Winter that an orphan girl created to keep her angel trapped in ice, until she is ready to fly away with him.

This Give-a-Way has ended...

This week, one really lucky winner gets a gorgeous tee of her/his choice by Binary Winter. So, make your favourite choice carefully, cuz if you win, that is the tee you will receive.

One such top you might choose, is "Cameo Mecanique".
In Victorian times, a woman's treasured charm was most often
a cameo carved with her own likeness. Adorned with graceful gears and delicate blossoms, "Cameo Mecanique" is a modern take on a timeless charm.

All Binary Winter items are printed with environmentally-friendly water based inks onto sweatshop free American Apparel clothing. The winner chooses from sizes S-XL.

To Enter...
Pick your most favourite Binary Winter tee and then comment here to tell us which item you'd like for your very own if you win!
★ For an extra entry into this contest...
